August 19, 1938 - December 7, 2021
Janice Rogers Anderson, aged 83, died December 7, 2021 in Naples, Florida. Janice was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard; her parents, Francis and Regina; and her brother, Richard. She is survived by her second husband, Gordon; sons Richard (Kathleen), James, Tyme (Dawn); grandchildren Levi (Jennifer), Samantha (Joseph), Lana, and Julia; great-grandchildren Charlotte and Elijah; sisters-in law Joan and Judi. Jan has also left behind her step-family: daughter Evelyn, son Ian (Corlis), three grandchildren: Stephanie (Sandy), Brent (Chantelle), Jennifer (Brandon); and 8 great-grandchildren: Ben, Will, Addy, Audrey, Beckett, Andy, Lane, Renan. She leaves behind dozens of friends world-wide. As a child, Jan dreamed of traveling the world; her father told her stories about other lands. One day, Jan would become co-owner of a travel agency and visit six continents! After what she said was a “picture perfect childhood”, she graduated from St. Agnes High School in College Point, Long Island. At her first job as a mail girl at J.P. Morgan on Wall Street, Jan met a handsome young man, an office worker by day and Sinatra-style crooner by night. Five months into dating, as they sat in his 1956 Oldsmobile, Richard sang “I’m your big and brave and handsome Romeo. How I won you I shall never, never know. I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie.” Jan opened the glove box to find a diamond ring. (Click this link to hear a Sinatra recording of the song https://youtu.be/VjN4C5ftuDI.) Jan and Richie had three sons and for a short time, one foster son. Later, they cared for four foster daughters. Jan loved babies and left lots of bright red lipstick kisses on little cheeks. She said it was a great blessing to have such wonderful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jan was vivacious, optimistic, and creative. She could effortlessly organize an intimate dinner party or a cruise for two hundred. Her clothing designs once sold at Saks 5th Avenue. Her other creative activities were decorating, cooking, and writing poems to celebrate special occasions for family and friends. She often volunteered and spoke fondly of singing at nursing homes with the Morning Glories. Packing suitcases for world travel was exciting. Jan always returned home with the names of new friends in her address book and tales of adventures. Once, she backed off a pier while taking a photo and disappeared from view. Richard thought he’d find her on the rocks below. Jan fell in the water and was unhurt, but her gold lamé slippers floated out to the South China Sea and were never recovered. Richard’s sudden illness and death was devastating to Jan and the family. They took great solace in his confession of faith in Christ before death. Six months later, Jan was diagnosed with breast cancer. A second bout of breast cancer and many other health problems didn’t defeat her. She had an indomitable will and strong faith. A few years later, Jan met her second husband, Gordon, on a cruise. They shared lovely waterside homes in Ontario and Florida and loved to sail, play cards with friends, and dance. Jan and Gordon continued to travel as long as health allowed, and enjoyed many years together with family and friends. Jan fully embraced life. However, knowing the best trip was yet to come, in the end she willingly left her body behind and traveled in spirit to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her death was swallowed up in victory; she is absent from the body but present with the Lord. Asked if she had any last words for family and friends, Jan said “That they might trust in Jesus and be saved.” A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul of the Cross Church, 10970 Jack Nicklaus Dr., N. Palm Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jan’s memory to Avow Hospice, Naples, FL. https://avowcares.org/donate-now/.
